Africa and Rhinos

by | 29-07-2011 17:54

Poaching has been a great source of income to the bad guys. In case of rhino, the rhino horns sell more than gold and has been a source of fast money. Africa from recent count has 24,990 rhinos.

In the last 3 years, 800 African rhinos has been killed. Poachers are now even using helicopters, night-vision goggles and high-powered rifles like Ak-47 and heavy caliber rifles.

IUCN and Traffic, a wildlife trade monitoring network, found that between the year 2006 and 2009 95% of poaching occured in Zimbabwe and South Africa. South Africa is alone the home for 90% of world's rhino population.

Rhinos are especially poached for their horns which is used as alleged aphrodisiacs and in traditional medicines or turned into decorative dagger handles. It is cure for diseases like cold, high fever, high blood pressure and impotence.

The U.N.'s Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species banned the commercial trade in rhino horn in 1994.

Even though many steps has been taken to preserve rhinos, money have become the major hinderance. People are ready to hunt every species worth something without knowing the future impact.
