Pokhara is one of the most beautiful cities of Nepal. There are seven lakes in this very city and lots of other scenic beauty too. Several tourist come each year to Pokhara to view its scenic beauty. But lately water hyacinth in the Phewa Lake (one of the seven lakes) is taking its toll in this tourist hub of Pokhara. Water hyacinth are dense floating plants, which grow in a rapid rate, have covered almost all the parts of the lake. Removing these baleful plants is just not easy, as attempts made by some individuals and institutions have been in vain. The plant has been spreading at an alarming rate. Especially in rainy season the growth rate is very high. While it is destroying the beauty of one of the main attractions in this tourist centre, it also time and again disrupts electricity generation, as it blocks the water canal to the power house. Recently, power generation in the city was halted for 30 hours due to this menacing plant. The main cause of the problem seems to be the pollution growing around the lake. People who boat there have been throwing the litters in the lake itself. Locals wash clothes around in the lake and swim in the lake resulting in the pollution of the lake.
