Mexican prairie dog, do you know what is that?

The Mexican prairie dog, Cynomys mexicanus, as its scientific name is, is an endemic animal of Mexico. It could be said that it is a relative of squirrels. It grows up to 44 centimeters long and weighs approximately one and a half kilograms. The prairie dog emits barks similar to those of a dog.

Interestingly, this species makes positive changes such as the renewal and oxygenation of soils. In addition to the fact that this species fertilizes and counteracts shrub populations, several animals come to live in its burrows when it abandons them. That is to say, it is fundamental to the ecosystem. Why is the Mexican wildland dog in constant danger of extinction? mainly because of the uncontrolled advance of agriculture and cattle ranching. Sadly, they have tried to exterminate it because it is considered a danger to agriculture and it is even hunted and sadly used as a pet.

As we have seen, this animal is essential for the environment. Unfortunately, it is in danger of extinction. for the simple reason of being considered a pest for agriculture. The solution, in my opinion, is to generate measures to curb the advance of agriculture in these areas, and other species such as the golden eagle, badger, and rattlesnake grasslands, among others, feed on this animal, so it is of vital importance to this animal.
