April eco-article from Ambassador of Gumi 2

by | 17-07-2011 00:43

As I have mentioned in my previous article, I would like to cover current environmental policies of Gumi city. In big picture, there are two main policies. The first one is to recover 2 streams of rivers, and the second one is to plant ten million trees.

The first plan is to recover two streams of river that dry up during spells of dry weather. Main principle is to develop an underground tunnel to provide abundant source of water from the main stream of Nakdong-river. It is expected to make the water flow spontaneously through the center of Gumi. As a result it will provide natural sights to citizens as well as serve to recover the ecosystem around it. The city mayor said, ?As we restore and enliven the dried, and abandoned river in the city, the water quality will get better and through dynamic ecosystem around it, the river will provide our citizens lots of great things.?

The second plan is to plant ten million trees! It has been operated since 2006 and is expected to end in 2015. The reason why this plan is so long-termed unlike any other plans is that people recognized the need to fundamentally better the environment of Gumi, especially because it has big industrial complex. In addition it does not only aim to just plant trees. This plan has several branches of goals. They are planting trees along the street, pulling down unnecessary walls, making small forests around schools, consolidating green tracts of land around apartments, and so on. Also the city is implementing a new system which regulates citizens? daily emissioned carbons. Hopefully it will be take a step towards becoming green city and green society.
