by Bam Azores | 04-07-2011 20:25

Concerned individuals and organizationswent to Quezon Memorial Circle in the Philippines to participate in the International Plastic Bag-Free Day.  They linked together a ¢¯plastic bag chain¢¯ made of used plastic bags and surrounded the full circumference of the Quezon Circle.

The group thanked the local government units (cities and towns) who have started to phase out and ban plastic bags --  Muntinlupa City; Carmona, Cavite; Antipolo City; Los Banos, Laguna; Sta. Barbara in Iloilo; Lucban, Quezon; Infanta, Quezon; Imus, Cavite; Binan, Laguna; Batangas, City; and Burgos, Pangasinan. Ten more are proposing to do the same.

The group called for laws that will: phase out plastic bags; promote organic reusable bags; support cities and towns in their waste management programs, etc.  The group also warned about the use of ¢¯biodegradable¢¯ plastics because studies revealed that while these materials may degrade in 2-5 years, their biodegradability remains unclear.
