Ethiopian floods

by | 20-06-2011 13:28

Nearly one month after heavy rains swept through eastern and southern Ethiopia the situation has began to stabilise.

The heavy rains, which hit the country last month killing at least 700 people, have abated and while water levels are not falling, the threat of further catastrophic floods seems to have been averted.

Ten of thousands of people, who were made homeless by the floods, however are still living in temporary shelter and there is an urgent demand for food, clean water and medical supplies.

The few that are returning to their homes, face an uphill battle to rebuild their houses and their livelihoods.

Many villages, especially in the south, remain marrooned. accessible only by boat, hampering relief efforts.
