Electric Vehicles: Great for Your Wallet and The Environment

by Paisley Hansen | 21-08-2022 11:48

Electric vehicles used to be futuristic dreams for the ultra-rich. Now, the future is here and electric vehicles are available for a range of accessible budgets. Many drivers wish to choose a vehicle that will be beneficial for their wallet and the environment. You can make such a choice from a well-informed position and be a part of creating positive change. Think about the following ways that switching to an electric vehicle can be budget-friendly and earth-conscience.

1. Use Federal Tax Incentives

Federal tax credits are available to drivers with plug-in electric vehicles. With this tax break, a flat amount from about $2,500 to $7,500 is applied to your tax bill. You must satisfy certain requirements, like having an external charging source and battery with a minimum capacity of 5 kWh. Act before the government phases out the incentive program, and compare auto loan rates for your new vehicle with these savings in mind.

2. Benefit from State Programs

In addition to federal incentives, individual states have their own programs to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. These incentives can include free parking, HOV lane access, lower driving-related fees, decreased utility charges, purchasing rebates, and emissions inspection exemptions. Some programs are run directly by the state and others are the purview of local utility companies. Research your state¡¯s programs and eligibility standards, such as official proof of residency.

3. Survey Pre-Owned Options

Now that electric vehicles have been on the market for several years, you can find great pre-owned options on the market. This is easier on your wallet and better for the environment because no new materials have to be sourced. Check for collision records, mileage, battery maintenance, and warranty availability.

4. Reduce Carbon Emissions

Traditional gas-guzzling vehicles are a huge source of global carbon emissions. Higher carbon emissions contribute negatively to harmful climate change. Even with manufacturing-related emissions, electric vehicles create far fewer carbon emissions over their driving lifetime. This reduction in CO2 emissions is one part of protecting the Earth¡¯s environment for future generations.

5. Avoid Gas Costs

Fluctuating gas prices can be stressful for gas-reliant drivers and their bank accounts. You can avoid this factor entirely by driving an electric vehicle. If you rent an electric vehicle on vacation, you do not have to think about refueling at the pump before you catch your flight home.

6. Manufacture with Green Materials

Eco-conscious auto companies are more likely to use green materials in the manufacturing of electric vehicles. Since being the superior option for environmentally minded consumers is vital for sales, these companies are incentivized to use sustainable materials. Ask detailed questions at your car dealer and research materials before your next test drive.

7. Reduce Maintenance Costs

There are many significant maintenance costs associated with gas-powered vehicles. Electric vehicle motors rely on about 1,800 fewer parts than typical combustion engines, so there are fewer possibilities for error. There is no oil to change, oil filter to check, or belt to maintain.

8. Charge on Clean Energy

Relying on electricity to charge means that EVs can run on clean energy. Depending on where you live, you may have access to solar or wind-powered EV charging stations. Consider installing a solar power system at your home to energize your household and mobility.

9. Add a Home Charging Station

You may also be able to access local incentives for installing a dedicated electric vehicle home charging station. Although most EVs can be charged in regular outlets, they may require adapters and many hours to achieve a full battery. Installing a charging station can shorten charging time and be appealing to future home buyers.

10. Optimize Battery Life for Long Drives

Most electric vehicles have energy settings for various common scenarios. Managing your use of climate control features on long highway drives can help you get more distance out of a single charge.

Feel great about protecting the environment as you hit the open road.
