Monthly Thematic Report May - Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity and Eco system

by Sagar Koirala | 12-08-2022 01:59

Biodiversity and ecosystem totally depend upon the climate. In the present context of the world, climate change is causing major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem and impacts are expected to increase as climate change continues and may even accelerate. Climate change refers to the global phenomenon of climate transformation characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet that are caused due to various factors. Climate change is a major global threat that has already had an observed impact on biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Over the last century, the global average temperature has risen 0.7¡ÆC and is predicted to continue rising. As climate change is expected to increase over the next century, it is expected to become one of the major drivers for the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem. Thus, it is important to understand the link between biodiversity, ecosystem and climate change. As our mother planet is rich in biodiversity and ecosystem, we must be concerned about its preservation and promotion as well. Climate change is both a cause and effect of biodiversity and ecosystem change on the planet. Along with irresponsible human activities, the multiple components of climate change contribute to be the main drivers of loss of biodiversity and ecosystem. Climate change has directly or indirectly changed the patterns and dynamics of energy flow and material circulation of energy and material circulation which greatly impact the ecosystem and its services. For example- the capacity of ecosystems to provide climate regulation for a base depends on the diversity of spices they currently support. Climate change is also a result of the way in which biological resources are converted into useful goods and services and the way in which grasslands and forests are converted into croplands. Climate change is mainly caused due to emission of greenhouse gases, high population growth, rapid use of non-renewable resources, burning of fossil fuels, lack of sustainable development practices, deforestation, pollution, lack of proper waste management policies etc. These resulting factors bring change on climate as a result of loss of biodiversity and ecosystem that directly causes impacts on human populations. Human population depends upon ecosystem services so that the hamper in ecosystem services directly leads to hampering the human population. This whole study considers the connection between climate, biodiversity and ecosystem. Climate change impacts on both biotic and abiotic creators of nature. But, here in this article we will mainly discuss the impact of climate Change on biotic species on terrestrial, marine and freshwater systems and ways to reduce such impacts as well. Impact of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem includes loss of various species of plants and animals, migration of such species, lack of proper functioning of ecosystems services etc. A warming climate causes melting of ice, warming of fresh water supplies and hydropower that serve millions of people. Change in climatic pattern will impact agriculture and food security as well. Human infrastructure is also threatened by climate

change. The impact of climate Change on the terrestrial system includes: loss of various terrestrial species of plants and animals, lack of food for terrestrial species, forest fires, etc. Such impacts greatly contribute to loss of biodiversity and disturbance in the ecosystem. Those species which can sustain changes respectively with climatic conditions can only do so in the present situation whereas others species are in verse of extinction. Similarly, there is a direct impact of climate change in marine systems. Marine systems are more in comparison with other systems of nature. Climate change causes a lot of disturbances in habitats found in marine systems. Not only marines fresh water systems are also facing a lot of troubles due to global climate change. Climate change is causing an obstacle in different systems of biodiversity and ecosystem. In order to decrease the impact of climate on biodiversity and ecosystem many things should be considered and sorted out as well. The first and foremost thing is to reduce the rate of emission of greenhouse gases as early as possible. Secondly sustainable development's objectives and principles should be considered while completing any development activities. Likewise, plantation should be done on barren land. The irresponsible human activities like - burning of fossils for production of energy, deforestation, pollution etc. should be ended soon. It will ensure the best future and result in preventing the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem.
