5 Awesomely Fun Hobbies That Won't Hurt the Environment

by Paisley Hansen | 21-07-2022 14:13

Today there is a consciousness in the world concerning climate change. People and businesses are investing in sustainable practices, whether it be recycling aluminum cans or designing electric vehicles. Living green does not demand big lifestyle changes. Whether at work or play, there are ways of doing things that can have less of an impact on the environment. In fact, there are loads of hobbies that you can engage in that don't harm the environment at all.

1. Lawn Games

A yard strewn with pickleball paddles, croquet mallets and bocce balls represents many hours of sustainable entertainment for the whole family. Lawn games aren't mindless fun, either. Just ask your friend who always knocks your ball out of the way or secures the pickleball win with a nasty drop shot on the heels of a deep ranger. (Pickleball can be played on grass, by the way, as long as it's cut pretty short.)

Lawn games are awesome for creating little tournaments for friends and family. Here is a list of lawn games that are taking the world by storm and helping to keep it green:

  • Kan Jam

  • Cornhole

  • Lawn bowling

  • Spikeball

  • Large Tower Jenga

  • Lawn chess

  • Wiffle ball

2. Jewelry Making From Recycled Objects

There is always going to be fine jewelry out there that costs more than a house. These days, though, people are understanding the purpose of jewelry in a new way. Most middle-class folks don't seek the biggest and rarest gems, communicating cold wealth, so much as seeking fun jewelry that shows off their personalities and communicates happiness.

You can really use any kind of recycled material; it's very much up to your imagination. Buttons, coins, old jewelry and loads of other objects can serve your creative needs. The beauty of creating your own jewelry hobby is that you have nobody to answer to. You're the boss and the final decision-maker.  There are strategies out there for cutting holes into hard metals like coins which should help to make your jewelry more dynamic.

3. Organic Gardening

Whether you choose to plant flowers or edibles, organic gardening is a sustainable way to spend your time and facilitate the growing and blossoming of beautiful things. By eschewing pesticides and harmful fertilizers, you'll be creating a thriving natural space built upon a foundation of healthy soil.

4. Hiking and Cycling

Any time you travel by your own steam, rather than by means of fossil-fuel, you're helping your planet. Both are proven to have mental and physical health benefits and both put you out in the world of fresh air and nature. Whether you're in town or in the forest, hiking and cycling are habit-forming in the best way.

5. Bird Watching

Birds are, quite simply, fascinating animals and there's a reason that people have been setting time and space aside to observe them for hundreds of years. To be among nature, watching and listening to them go about their business is peaceful and absorbing. You'll probably begin researching and learning all about the birds that you've been seeing, which greatly enhances the experience.

You could either do a quick Google search and will almost certainly find a bird sanctuary near you and pay a visit or set up some feeders in the yard. If it's not amazing to see how quickly all types of birds will begin visiting, it's inspiring because you're offering a basic need to other creatures. Grab a set of binoculars or just point your camera phone in the direction of the chirping and feel the zen.

Do you want to help the environment with its health? Simply engaging in hobbies that don't add a negative impact on the planet is a pretty awesome way to do so. The beautiful thing is that there are so many things to do that accomplish this, all you need to do is grab some friends and enjoy.
