by DIBYA BHATTA | 03-07-2022 11:42

Today, the population is increasing by leaps and bounds, and so is the demand for food. To meet the need of the global food market, modern innovations and techniques are in use rapidly, and chemical fertilizers and pesticides drenched in the soil. Not fertilizer alone but also heavy metal-containing pesticides and growth promoters are used in the soil. This has seriously affected the health of humans, plants and the environment. So the concept of green and organic certification is practiced by countries around the globe. But for a crop to fulfill this criterion, there are several conditions to be fulfilled by crop material and the soil on which the crop is planted. The crops also need to meet requirements when they have to be exported to other countries as an organic product. Cultivating certain crops in an area without using any chemicals doesn't guarantee that the product is organic because the land should also not have a history of chemical use for the past five years. Companies around the globe follow specific quality check procedures to certify the crop as organic.

To meet certification criteria, companies must: Prepare and implement an Organic Production or Handling System Plan. Comply with Organic Management Practices. Maintain relevant records for at least five years and label products appropriately.

There are five basic steps to organic certification: The farm or business adopts organic practices, selects a USDA-accredited certifying agent, and submits an application and fees to the certifying agent. The certifying agent reviews the application to verify that procedures comply with USDA organic regulations. Organic certification verifies that your farm or handling facility complies with the USDA organic regulations. Once certified, you can sell, label, and represent your products as organic.

The best way to determine if your farm or product is eligible for USDA organic certification is to contact a reputable organic certifying agent. An organic certification agent is accredited by the National Organic Program (NOP).

Going from the current status of farming to organic will help us reduce our carbon footprint. It will also allow us for healthy living and healthy eating. It will help a lot to our planet for its betterment.
