[Thematic Report for June] What is the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI)?

by Seojin Lee | 07-07-2022 01:15

We are always told that climate change and global warming is a serious issue. However, do we ever stop and think about whether there are solutions being implemented?
Amongst many actions being taken, a notable one is the Green Certification Programs. This system of certification programs exists to differentiate and recognize producers and companies that have an eco-friendly vision.
One of the many programs is the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI). This certificate was created to protect certain standards of animal husbandry in farming. Just as humans have a huge impact on the environment, so do animals. When it comes to human interference, managing animal husbandry-the act of selecting and breeding animals for agricultural purposes-is particularly crucial. AWI aims to enforce breeding methods and techniques that result in the least pollution possible.
For instance, some of the standards that the Animal Welfare Approved program, one of the programs regulated under AWI, enforce that the livestock have essential access to outdoors so that they behave naturally (e.g. ducks must be able to swim in water).
These standards are enforced in order to protect not only the physical, but also the mental health of the animals. Because animals have a huge impact on our environment as well, it is important that certificate programs like AWI are being acknowledged and sought.
