During construction, repair, and maintenance of a building, it is essential to utilize different raw materials, water, energy sources, and other natural resources and it also emits various types of waste and harmful emissions to the environment. So the concept of green building standards, certification, and rating systems has emerged to mitigate the detrimental impact of building on the environment.

Building research establishment environment assessment method(BREEAM) was the first green building rating system in the world, developed in 1990. In 2000, US green building council have set certain new construction criteria through the Leadership in energy and environmental design(LEED) rating system.

Here are the different green building systems

1) Energy star:

The US Environmental Protection Agency operates Energy Star in partnership with the US Department of Energy, with a primary focus on energy efficiency to minimize environmental deterioration. It primarily promotes energy-efficient practices, buildings, and products, with the ultimate goal of decreasing energy consumption.

2) Green Globe

It is one of the online green building rating and certification systems, launched by ECD( Energy and environmental Canada) in 2000. Green globe is operated in Canada and USA and used for a wide range of buildings i.e commercial, institutional and multi-residential.

3) Green Guard

It provides suggestion to both manufacturer and buyer for identification of products that produces less chemical emission to improve the indoor air quality in which products are used.
