Haritha Haram

by Rushitha Satla | 29-06-2022 22:47

Haritha Haram is an auspicious program launched by government of Telangana, India on 3rd of July, 2015. It is one the flagship programs to rejuvenate degraded forests, protecting these forests from the threats such as smuggling, encroachment, fire and grazing. Haritha Haram is a Telugu word which means " GARLAND OF GREENARY". About Rs 923 crore is proposed in the budget for " Telangana Ku Haritha Haram", one of the largest efforts anywhere in the world to increase the green cover. As a part of this program, the government has planted between 2015 and 2022, a total of 243 crores of plants covering 9.56 lakh acres.
The program used multiple planting models:
1.AVENUE PLANTATION: Plants will be planted along national and state high ways.
2.BLOCK PLANTATION: Planting in barren and waste lands under local panchayats.
3. INSTITUTIONAL PLANTATION: Planting in schools, colleges, offices, public places.
4.Barren Hill Plantation: Plantation on the hills.

Even being a great program, many people criticized it because the government only concentrated on planting but not on taking care of them. However, compared to previous statistics,  the launch of this program definitely benefitted the state in terms of improving climatic conditions. In some areas of telangana the barren land is now available for agriculture. The fertility in the soil is restored resulting in the reduced soil erosion.
Now let's assume every state in the country implements this project, then we could at least make the barren land into a land filled with green vegetation. We could even approach a procedure called seed ball dispersing, where a seed is kept inside a clay ball and dried under sunlight and these dried clay balls are thrown out on the waste lands during rainy season, when it rains the seed sprouts and grows into a  new plant.
There is a great saying in sanskrit which goes as "The one you save, will save you". Lets save the environment, it will save our species.
