Technologies to treat water pollution

by Ananya Passi | 01-06-2022 07:30

Water pollution has been a big issue in India for over a decade now since 70 percent of the surface water is not in the condition to be consumed. With each passing day, the water bodies are becoming toxic. This article will inform you about the technologies developed by Indians that can treat water pollution well.

  1. Converting sewage water to drinkable water

The water filter, the size of an index number developed by Thomas Cyriac and Anto P Biju, converts 30 liters of impure water into drinkable water and costs a mere 10 rupees. It uses activated carbon. It requires little to no maintenance, and the cartridge inside the purifiers has to be replaced every five years.

2.The use of floating wetlands

Floating wetlands are used to make water bodies pollutants-free.

Floating wetlands are constructed using aquatic plants, and these plants will be put on the buoyant mats made from discarded soda bottles and drainage pipes. This island will absorb aluminum, manganese, iron, and other contaminants through their foilage and roots when placed on surface water. Moreover, these wetlands prevent the growth of algae and help in improving the overall system.

3.Purification of groundwater

Anjan Mukherjee has created a Taraltec Disinfection Reactor to purify groundwater in just 30 minutes, killing 99 percent of the microbes present in the groundwater. This device has no maintenance costs since it requires neither electricity nor fuel to function.
