Environmental Education and Sustainable Development

Environmental education is the process and result of promoting in all those who live in a given environment, adults and children, the deepest knowledge, the most intense love and respect for the place where we live, the strongest commitment to the defense of our home, our community, our neighborhood, our city, etc. as an indispensable scenario to make a life with human quality; in other words, within stimulating conditions to make every day of our life better than the previous one.

It is to promote the purest, strongest and most concrete love for our homeland starting from the love for our family and communal land. It is to educate us in the practice of a harmonious relationship with our environment.

A well planned environmental education in our region means educating us to take advantage of our ecological and landscape diversity, without destroying it. Educating us for the rational use of our natural resources, within the doctrinal framework of sustainable development, that sublime creation of our indigenous peoples, now assumed as a world doctrine to preserve our species. Educate us to have a deep knowledge of our environment. Educate us to preserve our multiculturalism.

Within the framework of an education with these aims, our educational centers must leave their indifference and become an agency of formation of the basic psychic structure so that in our children germinate the sensitivity, the desire of knowledge and the commitment with our environmental surroundings.

This awareness will make it possible for them to join the agents among whom the solution of such problems lies. That is to say, that they assume individual and social responsibilities in the conservation of an environment conducive to our social development. Sensitizing our children and youth to environmental problems should be a fundamental component of their education as part of the strategy for them to become active promoters of the conservation of their environment, based on the practice of positive behaviors for this purpose, in full accordance with the postulates of sustainable development.
