[Thematic April Report] Soil Pollution

by Sara Dauletyarova | 18-04-2022 21:48

Soil plays a vital role in our life. Like water, the soil suffers from pollution as well. Nature waste such as dead plants, rotten fruits and vegetables, and animal carcasses contributes to the fertility of the soil, while man-made waste makes soil contaminated. This is because the waste products consist of full chemicals, which cannot be found on Mother Earth.

Causes of Soil Pollution
*Industrial Activities- it is the main factor in the soil problem. The industrial waste includes chemical, hazardous, and toxic waste. Eliminating it can be harmful and unsafe. Industrial waste takes a considerable time to disappear from the soil¡¯s surface.

*Agriculture- the widespread use of modern pesticides and fertilizers is the cause of soil contamination. These chemicals pose a problem for nature, mixing with water and declining soil fertility, they infiltrate the ground.

*Accidental oil spills-oil spills mostly happen in the fuel stations during the storage and transport of chemicals. It reduces the soil quality and makes them generally unsuited for cultivation.

*Garbage disposal-in addition to industrial waste, humans generate their garbage products by throwing them into landfill sites.

Effects of Soil Pollution
*Human health-The crops and plants we consume mostly absorb most of the pollution and spread them on our bodies. It could lead to congenital disorders and chronic health problems, which take time and effort to be cured.

*Growth of Plants-Soil pollution affects the availability of nutrients, and the growth of plants stops flourishing in such conditions. Also, it increases the level of salinity, which is unpleasant for the growth of plant life.
