6 Things Every New House Should Have and Why

by Paisley Hansen | 15-04-2022 17:14

There is a lot to think about when moving to a new home. You'll need curtains, furniture, and maybe even new appliances. There are a  few other things that you might not think about but that are equally important, like these six things every new homeowner should have.

1. A Sturdy Ladder

Even tall people will need an occasional step up to reach higher items, which is why a sturdy ladder is an absolute must for any new home. This is especially true if there are vaulted ceilings in any of the rooms or if you plan on making home improvements on your own. Even something as simple as cleaning the gutters requires the use of a ladder.

You have several options when buying a ladder. A-frame and extension ladders are the most basic; however, there are some other options on the market now that offer up more flexibility. For example, a telescoping or multi position ladder is easier to store and can be used in multiple forms.

2. Emergency Supplies

Unfortunately, emergencies can happen to anyone. To minimize their impact on your family, keep supplies like these on hand:

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Fire extinguishers

  • A first aid kit

  • An emergency bag with supplies like a flashlight, batteries, chargers, and potable water

3. A New Door Lock

When you buy a house, even if it is newly built, several other people already have a key to it. It may be a realtor, builder or the previous owners (and their friends and family). It might even be a dog walker or other service person that regularly visited the house. Do you really want all of these people to have a key to your new home?

It is relatively simple to install a new door lock. If your current lock or deadbolt has a combination pad, you can probably skip that step and reprogram it to a new code. Just be sure that there isn't a keyed override system in place.

4. A Home Security System

A security system is a good idea for a new house. If nothing else, it can help give you peace of mind. Look for a system that connects to a central system or alerts you through your cell carrier if there is a problem. Many have cameras so you can see exactly what is going on in your home no matter where you are when an alarm goes off.

5. Basic Household Tools

Even if you don't plan to complete any home improvements, you will still probably need some basic tools on hand. They can be helpful for everything from hanging pictures or curtains to tightening loose bolts to putting together ready-to-assemble furniture.

While you may be tempted to run out and buy a shiny new tool storage chest, a simple toolbox or bag stocked with essentials is probably sufficient for most homeowners. Include pliers, a hammer, tape measure, screwdriver set and an adjustable wrench to start. Then, you can build up a collection as you find out what you need.

6. A Fireproof Safe

You may think of a safe as something other families need, but everyone can benefit from a basic fireproof storage place. Place all of your important documents and any valuables in the safe, and they will be protected in an emergency. You will also always know where your valuables are located, so you won't have to dig through drawers or closets trying to find your favorite necklace.

Conclusion

Having the right supplies can make moving to a new home easier. A multi-purpose ladder, tools, security items and a safe storage place will give you a good start.
