What is an axolotl?

What is an axolotl?

A Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an animal that can regenerate its limbs in a matter of weeks. Axolotls were named after the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, who could take the form of a salamander. Xolotls are also related to dogs, and "atl" is the ancient Aztec word for "water," so "axolotl" is sometimes translated as "water dog." [2]

Although these animals reproduce rapidly, sadly, amphibians are endangered in the wild. The color of these animals changes a lot. Most of them are black or brown, but they also come in other colors.

Now, where do axolotls come from? Axolotl inhabit lakes and canals in the southern part of Mexico City. They weigh from 0.95 to 3.6 kg. Their diet consists of worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and fish. Their life expectancy is 10 to 15 years.
