by Dolma Diki Sherpa | 23-03-2022 00:08

The idea of water day was adopted by the UN general assembly conference on environment and development was conducted in Rio De Janeiro in 1992. Celebration of world water day on march 22 is officially begun in 1993. This day is celebrated to aware people of the preservation and sustainable management of water resources. This day is celebrated based on a different theme every year.

The theme for world water day 2022 is ¡°Groundwater making the invisible visible¡±. The main aim is to create awareness about the significance of groundwater, to emphasize groundwater, and preserve it in a sustainable way for the future generation. According to ICIMOD, groundwater has a significant role in the livelihood, cultural practices of mountain communities and it is fundamental to life in Hindu Kush Himalaya.

It has been said that ¡°water is life¡±. Water is essential for all living beings. Both plants and animals cannot survive in absence of water. Nowadays over-utilization of natural resource, industrialization, deforestation, increment in population leads to a shortage of water. So it is essential to conserve water resources by adopting different ways.

Groundwater is found below the subsurface of the earth. It occupies all parts of empty pores in the subsurface region. Ground water plays an important role in the development of the arid and semiarid region. A large amount of groundwater resources is not discovered. Groundwater is continuously restored by rainfall, snowmelt, and outflow of river water. Overuse of groundwater has an adverse effect on basic water supply, agricultural production, and climate resilience. Mixing chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizer with groundwater cause pollution in groundwater so it is necessary to adopt preventive measure to minimize contamination of groundwater. Every individual should be concerned to preserve our natural water resources.
