Thematic Report - What Can I Do To Help The Environment

by Justice Obiri | 28-02-2022 13:23

What I am doing to help the environment

Days are rolling by as fast as the flight of an eagle. In Ghana, boreholes are the source of water for a lot of people particularly those located in rural areas. This is due lack of infrastructure coupled with a failed governance system. After 65 years of independence from colonization, the governments ought to have done better so far developments in the country is concerned.

Holed about 5ft2 in width and about 20ft in height are dug down into the ground. It dug till underground water is met. The hole is then cemented from the inner to the outer. The water rises to fill the hole dug up and people can fetch it, treat it and use it for their works. Day in day out, these boreholes get dirty and ought to be cleaned up. Studying this month¡¯s theme, I decided to help clean one which was very tough.

We started by fetching almost all the water in the borehole, we used the fetched water to irrigate the crops around in order not to waste it. After hours of carrying out this activity, we reached the bottom. I was not allowed to enter because it was my first time and they said it wasn¡¯t safe. The bottom was not clean, we removed more than 5 buckets stuck to the bottom over the years, bottles that had been thrown into the boreholes knowingly or unknowingly and a lot of trash. Almost everything that came from the bottom was dirt. People intentionally throw trash into what is supposed to be a lifesaving initiative. After the cleanup, I, together with my uncle whom I helped to do the cleaning, warned the people of the dangers of throwing waste into something that is consumed and also asked them to desist from allowing children to go near the borehole because it was not safe.

This is what I could do to help the environment as demanded by the theme. It is not all the time that we have to write, sometimes acting in person is the best way out and it inspires others to want to do something to help save the environment, I hope this inspires people to want to do more to save the environment.
