[Thematic report] What am I doing for the environment

by Seyi Jang | 19-02-2022 07:52

It¡¯s sad to hear that this is my last report as the 27th eco-generation regional ambassador. I had so much fun while writing, and the more I got to know about the planet, the more I wanted to change the world to make it more sustainable. In order to write this article, I looked back on my life to see whether I have been living an eco-friendly life. I think I tried my best to reduce the purchase of products, especially plastic ones and instead of using heater or air conditioner, I tried to wear more clothes or use paper fan. Among all the tiny actions that I have taken for the planet, I want to focus on my experience of donating money to the NGOs.

I felt like helping those people and animals at risk right now because of the rapid climate change is equally vital as changing my lifestyle to be more eco-friendly. NGOs are at the heart of this procedure since they can pressure the government and firms to make them implement effective policies and long term strategies, something that individual can¡¯t do. That is the reason I started donating to two NGOs, Amnesty International and Greenpeace. Amnesty International is an NGO fighting for human rights, including women, LGBTQ, human rights on N.Korea and people suffering from climate change. Climate change affects both directly and in a roundabout way to human. It facilitates inequality and harms the basic human rights like right to live, the right to drink clean water and so on. Greenpeace is a global campaigning network mainly focusing on climate change. Greenpeace is holding many campaigns such as the stop to the leak of Fukushima radioactive water or to protect the marine ecosystem. Both of these NGOs focus on campaigns purposed to educate people about the importance of environment and join voices to change the world.

I have been donating 12 dollars every month since last may. This is an incredibly small amount in order to save the world, and I have been struggling to think whether I can change the world with this. But I knew it is big for me since it is one quarter of my pocket money and decided to continue donating surely but slowly. I also joined many campaigns all the NGOs are doing such as youth activists and so on. I also subscribed to their newsletter in order to check out recent news related to environment. From my experience I wanted to share that you can donate small amount of money that you don¡¯t find it necessary, but it will definitely help the planet.
