What¡¯s happening in my state, Jharkhand? What¡¯s the FFF group?

by Risav Ganguly | 16-02-2022 14:35

The state of Jharkhand in India that¡¯s situated on the Chhotanagpur Plateau, has rich reserves of coal. But the state has been facing various environmental issues for years. ¡°Fridays for Future Jharkhand¡± is a youth-led movement combatting these issues of environment and climate change for the last 1 year. It is the only indigenous-led movement among 62 state chapters in India.

FFF Jharkhand started in June 2020 with very active and supportive volunteers. Today the group has a total of 79 volunteers starting from the age of 14 and above. This initiative has been started under the leadership of Ashish Birulee.

FFF Jharkhand is also trying to bring to notice the significance of the Indigenous way of living including their sustainable practices of celebrating festivals so that pollution can¡¯t be widely spread. The Indigenous traditions, culture and festivals have always been eco-friendly and the community threads the knowledge to their coming generations about the protection and promotion of nature¡¯s importance for the whole of humanity.

¡°Our group feels that the Global Climate Strike is the need of an hour to bring attention and spread awareness to the young people, corporates and the government as to how we humans have been continuously destroying nature for our greed of money and power. We should not delay in making them realise that we already have headed towards Climate Emergency. It is always the environment who protects us and it is our responsibility to protect it.¡± - Says the group.

The major focus of this group will be on how to reduce plastic pollution, overconsumption of electricity, saving groundwater, and also to make people aware of the importance of forests and the need to protect forest-dwelling communities in a true sense are the guardian of nature.

With these many indigenous movements coming up, surely Jharkhand will one day reduce the pollution level and more people will come in and join these movements.
