THEMATIC REPORT-"HOW AN ORGANISATION CAN BECOME CARBON NEUTRAL"

by Pragati Dubey | 27-01-2022 01:25

"HOW AN ORGANISATION CAN BECOME CARBON NEUTRAL"

Carbon Neutrality is Carbon Neutral - or Net Zero Carbon - is a term used to describe the state of an entity (such as a company, service, product or event), where the carbon emissions caused by them have been balanced out by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere in the world (carbonfootprint.com).

Steps of achieving Carbon Neutrality for an organisation-

1. Lead your path and communicate the plan with others.
By communicating your plan with the top members of your organisation and with the targeting audience will enhance your leadership skills and also it will result in the awareness among your employees and members and they will also understand why it is necessary to become carbon neutral.

2. Managing and investing in staff engagement.
It is very important that the staff should be properly managed and monitor for the steps they are taking in being carbon neutral and if required their training should be conducted for enhanced results. And be sure to celebrate even the small successes in order to encourage your employees.

3. Establishing the carbon baseline for your organisation.
It is very important for an organisation to know about the emissions from their business activities and should assess them and calculate their global carbon footprints. It should be noted that the carbon footprints and emissions should be tracked properly and accurately without any error, if you are not skilled in it, you should hire a sustainability expert for your work or their are various websites available which will help you well in it, which I have listed below,
1. https://www.nature.org/en-us/
2. https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/
3. https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/#/
I hope these websites will help you knowing your carbon footprints and help you achieving your carbon neutral organisation goal.

4. Getting Accreditation.
It is very important for an organisation to get certified or accredited from other external organisations and bodies. Accreditation to ISO 14064 and PAS 2060 (the international standard for carbon neutrality) show you are doing what you say you¡¯re doing and can stand up to scrutiny.

5. Collaborate.
Collaborate with other organisations in any means if they can benefit your motto/goal or helps you achieving success in the market in a sustainable way.

6. Use digital technology.
make sure to use that technology which can lower your carbon footprints as much as possible and enable your employees also to calculate their carbon footprints own their own and make a platform or app where they can submit their daily carbon footprints, which will help you to understand your organisations carbon footprints and make a baseline for it. Moreover, in these times of Covid-19 use of digital platforms will make it more handy and comfortable.

7. Offset.

However hard you cut carbon, for the foreseeable future it will be impossible to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions, so to become carbon neutral you will have to offset. Offsetting involves investing to capture from the atmosphere a quantity of carbon equivalent to what you release into it. There are many schemes to choose from, and not all do what they claim. So do your due diligence carefully to assure long-term performance of the solution you choose, and check that it will deliver positive social and economic outcomes for local people.

8. Invest.
There's always a room for innovation in the organisation. Seek help from the science or environmental experts to improve your plans in achieving a carbon neutral organisation. You can also invest in youth-based startups and models to spread your word and achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.
