[Thematic Report for December] Which Careers Are Friendly Towards the Use of Renewable Energy?

by Seojin Lee | 04-01-2022 15:05

As mentioned in the theme of the month article for December, choosing a profession that can be applicable to renewable energy does not always mean that the career option chosen has to be related to renewable energy. Fortunately, this also means that several professions that could¡¯ve been chosen by people without regard to encouraging or developing renewable energy could also be applied to encouraging or developing renewable energy. In this way, several people who have already chosen their professions could work to encourage or develop renewable energy without having to change their professions, and people who have not chosen their professions yet could have a wider variety of professions to choose from which could all be related to cultivating renewable energy.

Although the theme of the month called to choose a specific or general type of career that could be related to renewable energy, I believe that almost all professions could result in careers that could be related to renewable energy. I think that the more important decision is not which profession you choose but which career you choose with that profession, or more specifically, where you decide to apply the knowledge and experience you have acquired.

For example, it is generally agreed upon that an electric car will produce significantly less greenhouse gas emissions compared to the usual gasoline-burning car and that driving electric vehicles paired with ¡°improving fuel efficiency, making cars lighter and decreasing miles traveled per person¡± will result in a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and gasoline demand, meaning the less burning of fossil fuels (1).

Then, with the assumption that an electric car company is friendly towards using renewable energy, we can deduce that all of the people working in the company have careers that are friendly towards using renewable energy. For example, the engineers that design these cars are using their profession in a way that supports renewable engineering. Or, the factory workers, who do not need to have much expertise and could work in any other factory for any other company, would be using their profession in a way that supports renewable engineering by building these electric cars. Even the advertising team would technically be supporting renewable energy by encouraging people to use a product that is not as dependent on non-renewable energy. In these scenarios, although these people could probably undergo the same careers in any other company not related to sustainability, by working in this specific company, they would be encouraging the use of renewable energy.

Therefore, I believe that a lot more of us than we initially thought are capable of choosing a career option friendly towards renewable energy without having to give up on what we would like to do in the future. Personally, I would like to work with computers for any of the companies out there with the objective of making the earth sustainable!
