World Soil Day 2021

by Dolma Diki Sherpa | 05-12-2021 13:09

World soil day is celebrated every year on December 5. The main objective of this day is to create awareness about the significance of soil health for human beings, food security, and the ecosystem. To commemorate World Soil Day, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization hosts different community-based events. The main theme of soil day 2021 is ¡°Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity¡±. Soil sodification and salinization are the major constraints of agricultural productivity and food security at the global level. The main aim of soil day is proper management of soil to maintain a healthy ecosystem and to increase the productivity of the soil. It is necessary to be aware and encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to improve soil health. Different soluble salts such as NaCl found in soil are called soil salinization. In 2002, the International Union of soil science purposed December 5 as soil day. December 5 is the birth anniversary of H.M.king Bhumibol Adulyadei of who is president of Thailand and has a huge contribution to the formation of soil day. United nation officially declared December 5 as soil day in 2013. According to FAO, Soil erosion, salinization, compaction, acidification, and chemical pollution degrades 33 percent of soil.

As a student of agriculture, I plan to commemorate Soil Day by conducting 2 days online awareness campaign. I will provide various facts about soil through the Tunza Ecogeneration gallery and the Tunza Eco network Nepal Facebook page. The main aim of this campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of soil in an ecosystem, food security, and agriculture.
