WHAT IS ACID RAIN?

Acid rain ; or acid deposition, is a broad term that includes any form of precipitation that contains acidic components, such as sulfuric acid or nitric acid, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It occurs when emissions from factories, and vehicles contact with water in the atmospere. These contains nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and surfur trioxide, which when mixed with water becomes sulfuric acid and nitric acid respectively.

EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN

The resulting acids are precipated to earth as rain or snow with negative consequencies.
These includes acidification of soils, lakes, rivers and ocean with consequent damage to the terrestrial and marine flora and fauna.

On the other hand, acid rain also cause corrosion of metallic elements such as buildings and bridges.

HOW TO STOP ACID RAIN?

The only way to stop acid rain is to reduce or eliminate sources of emissions that causes it.
This involves a hugeinvestment in renewable energy sector.
