Theme Report Nov 2021- ¡®Flash Forest¡¯ to counter Air Pollution

by Aaditya Singh | 14-11-2021 07:22

¡®Flash Forest¡¯ is a Canadian company that markets and carries out reforestation with drones.

Air pollution is a serious threat to our environment. Indeed, we have to make necessary efforts to reduce air pollution. However, till the efforts bear fruit and we are able to bring down the air pollution levels on the planet, we have to ensure that the quality of air is improved by various means. Natural vegetation and trees are an effective means to improve air quality, considering that forests act as lungs of the planet, utilizing the carbon dioxide from the air to release oxygen. Over the last few decades, our rapid urbanization has unfortunately led to massive deforestation. This has negatively affected the natural lung capacity of the planet.

Nearly 13 billion trees are lost every year and less than half replanted, one of the reasons for this being that rate of cutting trees is much faster than the rate of planting them. Timber industry employs fast clearing methods with minimal human involvement through engineered and efficient harvesting technology, while tree planting is still handled with age old traditional methods- manually with bags of seeds and shovels.

¡®Flash Forest¡¯ employs drone engineering for accuracy, precision and speed in the reforestation process. As compared to traditional planting techniques, such planting is ten times faster and at a fraction of the cost. Post-harvest areas and forests ravaged by wild fires can thus be forested at a rapid pace through the use of UAV hardware, aerial mapping software, pneumatics, full automation and biological seed pod technology all based on well researched ecological science. This innovative use of technology can effectively restore entire ecosystems worldwide, towards carbon neutrality and mitigating the global ecological crisis.

Drones have been used as toys or as military tools but this company has deployed them to save the planet. They aim to plant one billion trees by 2028. I look forward to see Flash Forest grow its expertise and the technology reach all over the world.
