October Free Report. Pre-COP Event

by Vazira Ikhtiyorova | 25-10-2021 08:46

Dear all,

Hope you are doing well. Past 2 months have been such productive, unexpected, and memorable. I decided to write post about the event I recently have taken part.

As part of the pre cop26 events, Milan, Italy hosted the #youth4climate event. Almost 400 delegates from 186 countries came together to address the main urgencies and priorities of climate action.

I had the opportunity to attend as a delegate representing Uzbekistan. We were  divided into work groups in order to write a resolution paper for #cop26glasgow . The objective was to bring together local, national and multilateral efforts to achieve enhanced climate action now and the reduction of emissions by almost half as recommended by the IPCC.

Following 9 months of building momentum with the #Youth4ClimateLive Series, the selected delegates worked together remotely for six months prior to their arrival in Milan, developing a zero draft document with recommendations across four thematic areas of climate action. After two days of intense in-person negotiations, we met with over 50 ministers for an unprecedented intergenerational townhall moderated by the UN Secretary-General¡¯s Envoy on Youth Jayathma Wickramanayake, where those gathered spent an entire morning discussing the Youth4Climate asks and ambitions for urgent action rooted in social justice. However, I could not join while question&answer part due to long line.

The inspiring youth-led opening of Pre-COP26 set the tone for the following days, where party delegates met to make progress on key issues ahead of Glasgow. Throughout the proceedings, Italian Minister for Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani and COP26 President Alok Sharma made frequent reference to the youth declaration, culminating in a closing press conference where they both clearly stated how influential the young delegates were on the Pre-COP proceedings. The key messages of the Youth4Climate summit were included in Annex 2 of the Pre-COP26 Chairs¡¯ Summary document and represent a foundation to build from at COP26 and beyond, furthering meaningful youth engagement.

I personally learned a lot from the event that we must never be afraid of what we do but how we do and when we do! Meeting amazing people from all around the globe taught me to be tolerant and learn about the country's policies. In addition, saw people striking in my life for the first time ever as it is not popular in my country. Believe that only through patience. we get it.
