 I. What is eco-friendly solid waste management? Solid waste management is a comprehensive discipline that includes controlling the generation, storage, transfer and disposal of waste in the best possible way for public health. This management has different ways to apply them, such as: 1. Recycling This is a process in which waste is converted into new products or material resources with which to manufacture other products. In this way, waste undergoes a process of eco-environmental transformation so that it can be used in a manufacturing process, reducing the consumption of raw materials and helping to eliminate waste. 2. Waste shredders The use of suitable waste disposal units is viable to be classified as eco-friendly waste management. Garbage disposals are suitable for common kitchen waste and are capable of shredding large waste into smaller pieces that can be broken down at a faster rate. Garbage disposals facilitate waste reduction. 3. Composting Composting is a process where organic waste is broken down by microorganisms into simpler forms. The microorganisms use the carbon in the waste as a source of energy. In addition, the heat generated removes unwanted organisms, such as weed seeds and pathogens. Composting is one of the oldest and most efficient waste management techniques that limit the negative impacts of waste processes on our environment. II. Solid Waste Management in Peru Peru generates more than seven and a half million tons of solid waste per year, 64% of which comes from households. Over time, this rate has increased exponentially. In addition, it is estimated that by 2025 up to 36,000 tons of waste will be generated per day, making it necessary to propose immediate solutions. The Ministry of Culture pointed out that environmentally friendly waste management is a high-impact solution, but it will take time and patience to implement it in Peruvian society. Therefore, the ministry together with environmental NGOs such as the Association for Integral Research and Development (AIDER) and the Peruvian Foundation for the Conservation of Nature at the national level has begun to promote recycling as one of the pillars of the circular economy scheme that seeks to squeeze all human creativity to move from the current model of buy, use and throw away to finding a second use for thousands of waste products. In this effort to reuse resources, it is essential that citizens participate in the generation of less waste. Kjeld Nielsen, Director of Communications and Marketing at WWF Peru and professor at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, said that it is necessary to manage solid resources sustainably at the local level so that, in the future, garbage becomes a valuable input for the economy. But it is also essential that citizens reduce their level of waste production and recycle. As a result of this, the United Nations reported the progress and objectives that Peru is currently combating and solving at the same time. 1. Development of instruments and tools to strengthen the Ministry of Environment (MINAM) in the integrated management of solid waste from the integration of social, environmental, poverty and gender variables. 2. Development of instruments and tools to strengthen the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa in solid waste management based on the integration of social, poverty, gender and environmental variables. 3. Strengthening of pro-poor recyclers' associations and establishment of favorable conditions for long-term financial sustainability. 4. Mobilization of Peruvian society through volunteerism to change the attitude and behavior of the population towards solid waste. 5. Project management and promotion of opportunities to replicate the systematized experience in municipalities at the local and national level with the expansion of methodologies.
