Thematic report- Eco friendly waste management

The very first thing that comes in our mind about ecofriendly waste management is proper treatment of solid and liquid waste. Since ¡°eco-friendly¡± represents a sustainable and developed approach to managing processes, each eco-friendly method mentioned in this report is actually a part of the recommendations to improve solid waste management. Solid waste management is a broad term that refers to the management of waste generation, storage, transfer, and disposal in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. While the advantages of solid waste management have been well recognized, it is now time for eco-friendly approaches to gain traction. The most common municipal solid waste management in developing countries is open dumping or open burning, which has a severe environmental impact due to a lack of a management budget and weak policy for waste management of local communities, especially for clusters with garbage less than 5 tons per day. We may rescue our dear environment in a variety of ways by employing these approaches.

Ecofriendly methods of solid waste management

Recycling : Recycling is an environmentally friendly waste management strategy that protects the environment while also ensuring the community's well-being. Plastics, paper, glass, and aluminum, for example, can all be recycled and reused multiple times. The sorting of domestic and commercial waste into distinct categories is the first step in the recycling process. The materials are then delivered to the recycling unit, where they will be converted into new materials. Recycling has a significant impact on lowering landfill usage. Despite the fact that waste disposal is advantageous, landfills harm the environment by producing hazardous gases such as methane. As a result, recycling reduces the use of landfills, reducing methane gas emissions and the greenhouse effect.

Waste reduction and reuse :  The practice of reducing or eliminating the number of materials initially used is known as waste reduction. Waste reduction can be demonstrated by using reusable serving utensils and trays instead of disposable ones. Alternatively, of all the methods for waste management, reducing the amount you buy is the most important. In fact, if every household reduces their garbage, the problem will be alleviated. After waste reduction, reuse is suggested as an environmentally friendly solid waste management alternative. The term "reuse" refers to repurposing a substance in its current state. Some frequent examples can be found in books, clothing, culinary utensils, and other domestic items. When we examine the materials discarded, it is evident that they can be repurposed to address common problems and meet needs.

Garbage disposal : It is possible to classify the usage of proper waste disposal equipment as environmentally friendly waste management. Garbage disposers are designed for everyday kitchen waste and may shred bulk waste into smaller fragments that disintegrate more quickly. Waste disposal units make it easier to reduce waste. Food scraps account for 20% of all waste in the environment, thus disposing of them in a garbage disposer rather than trash would be a key step toward converting them to renewable energy or fertilizer rather than ending up in a landfill. As known, plastic bags are commonly used to dispose of food wastes. However, the use of disposal units lessens the amount of using plastic bags. So, fewer plastics go into landfills.

Composting :  Composting is a term used to describe the process of microorganisms breaking down organic waste into simpler forms. The carbon in the trash serves as an energy source for the microbes. Furthermore, the heat produced kills undesired organisms like weed seeds and viruses. Composting is an ancient and effective environmentally friendly waste management strategy that reduces the harmful effects of waste processes on our environment. Individual homeowners and neighborhood groups, as well as businesses, can easily implement composting. Overall, this technology offers a benefit in terms of waste volume reduction and the production of organic matter with various carbon and nitrogen ratios. During the composting process, the type of waste must be evaluated. Composting is not suitable for hazardous or inorganic wastes. Indeed, even a small bit of an incorrect product can completely damage a compost pile.

Hazardous waste sites :  Hazardous waste is generated primarily as a result of a number of industrial and commercial activities. Inflammability, corrosivity, reactivity, and toxicity are the qualities that constitute the hazardous waste category. Hazardous waste sites are contaminated with compounds that are detrimental to both human health and the environment. As a result, when it is discarded with other waste categories and mixed with non-hazardous garbage at a landfill, it poses a major concern. This could result in pollution of the air, water, and soil. It may be argued at this point that properly planned and constructed hazardous waste sites are another means of environmentally responsible waste management.
