by HASSAN ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD | 14-09-2021 01:39

One of Africa's largest freshwater bodies, LAKE CHAD, has shrunk by 90%.
Over 10 million people across the region are in need of emergency assistance.
The United Nations has termed the Lake Chad crisis as one of the worst in the world.Lake Chad straddles Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon And Chad and is home to 17.5 million people.
It is blessed with rich aquatic an terrestrial biodiversity.
Lake Chad basin comprises world heritage and Ramsar sites as well as wetlands of international importance. For years, the lake has been supporting drinking water, irrigation, fishing, livestock and economic activities for over 30 million people in the region.
It is vital for indeginous, pastoral and farming communities in one of the world's poorest countries. Therefore, as an ambassador to Nigeria, i want to use this opportunity to call for immediate interventions by the Governments, United Nations and other third parties to implement sustainable solutions in order to save the lake from drying up.
