Mangroves For Life

by HASSAN ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD | 05-09-2021 16:14

In recent years, scientist have warned against the continous disappearance of mangrove forests worldwide.
The decline is reported at about 2% per year with a total loss of around 35% disappearing in the last twenty years.
Nigeria's mangrove are amongst the worst degraded globally, but solutions are starting to take root at a national level.
Nigeria has the largest reserve of water-friendly (mangroves, to be specific) trees in Africa. Mangroves are important solutions to the climate change crisis. They store carbon four times more than traditional rainforests, serve as shoreline protection against floods and storms, prevent erosion, and maintain water quality and clarity.
In addition, mangrove habitat are a true nursery for many species of fish and a home for birds, reptiles, crustaceans and other invertebrates.
