by Mahsinur Rahman | 16-08-2021 15:35

The Bangladesh Environment and Development Society is a community-based non-profit, non-government and development organization committed to maintain ecological balance and create harmony between humans and nature.
BEDS was established for solving complex environmental and social problems in Bangladesh such as the adverse impacts of global warming, unsustainable use of natural resources, drinking water crisis, Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem and biodiversity destruction, increasing uses of dirty energy, gender inequity and human rights violation etc.
They have a number of ongoing projects which are helping to combat global warming and environment pollution. Urban Biodiversity Conservation project is working to conserve the biodiversity of many regions. Due to pollution the environment is at grave risk. In near future there might be no biodiversity in cities which may have a very negative impact on the environment and our future generation may lose the opportunity to grow with nature.
This project has been implemented in Khulna city. Overall goal of the project is to make an urban biodiversity corridor museum in Khulna city through conserving biodiversity such as birds, animals, fishes and trees with the engagement of civil society, government, companies and students for making a bridge between city people and urban biodiversity.
Another project of them is SATOYAMA Agriculture Conservation Activity through establishing community-based seed bank in the Sundarbans. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society and Japan Environmental Education Forum has taken a joint initiative to establish a community seed bank beside the initiatives of government to save the farmers and agriculture of Bangladesh from the grips of seed companies.
This initiative will also help to conserve the local biodiversity and above all environment balance. Another project named Eco Village has been educating and equipping people from the coastal areas with environment friendly stuff. This project is divided into three components included Green Housing, Green Education, and Green Business.
BEDS has completed more than 50 projects and received many prestigious awards. In addition, one of the BEDS implemented projects "Eco Village in Bangladesh" has been selected to be showcased at Expo 2020 Dubai's Global Best Practice Program.
