Creativity in Upcycling

Upcycling, as the implication in ¡®up¡¯, is to re-create something with a higher or added value. Creativity becomes an important aspect in upcycling, because how well a vision of a certain product is upcycled that would be reflected in the value of the upcycled product. Unique and unthinkable upcycled product would come from high creativity, as it would also be needed that the product is pleasing to the eye.

Upcycling is often used in fashion, by individuals that wants to help the environment so that another product does not just go to a dumping site. Clothes can be separated into pieces and redesigned by joining different parts from different articles of clothing through sewing. The clothes that would be created would then have a higher value. Meanwhile, I also have a friend that upcycles old t-shirts by drawing on them with a fabric marker. They make cool drawings, which is not something easy to do on clothes. The option of upcycling a t-shirt by drawing on them is done as to have something fresh in the closet but without replacing old clothes. This is so that clothes do not also end up in the landfill.

Before the pandemic, in my university, the canteen had chairs from upcycled barrels. It created a unique look to the canteen, with the floor just being cement. Some tables were made from old tires. Doing what can be done individually, really helps the environment. I hope that I could visit the canteen again to find inspiration.
