The EcoFriendly Agriculture (Thematic Report)

by Kushal Naharki | 14-08-2021 11:55

Sustainability refers to making the best use of the current resources without compromising the needs of the future generation. The world population is increasing at a rapid pace. By 2050, the population of the world is estimated to reach 10 Billion. More population means more food required to feed the people, hence agriculture plays an important role.

Agriculture sector is prone to the impacts of climate change and we must focus on sustainable agriculture to feed the current and future generation. Scaled-up actions across sectors are urgently needed to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes. A framework should be form to recognize the complexity and specificity of small landholding farmer, incorporate climate stressors on rural livelihoods and their contribution to vulnerability and study three different categories of climate change impact upon smallholder livelihoods. Addressing climate variability and extremes and their impact on food security and nutrition requires a focus on resilience. Context-specific interventions aimed at anticipating, limiting, and adapting to the effects of climate variability and extremes and building the resilience of livelihoods, food systems and nutrition to climatic shocks and stresses. By adopting sustainable agriculture, farmers can build rich, fertile soils that will grow robust crops while protecting water sources, storing carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating fields that are more resilient to extreme weather events.

We must minimize the use of pesticides which is harming our health, biodiversity and soil. We must look into eco-friendly alternatives to pesticides and adopt integrated pest management strategies. Farming communities should be made aware about the adoption of sustainable agriculture. The consumer should focus on buying eco-friendly products. The mechanization used in agriculture should also be made eco friendly. Anyone involved in the food system can help to reach that goal of sustainability in agriculture. Implementing sustainability into agricultural practices can look like a lot of things. Farmers can decrease the amount of water they use and find ways to use renewable energy to power their farms. Consumers can look for and only purchase foods that were processed sustainably. Sustainable agriculture has a bright future for investors as it could quickly become the top industry to feed the world.
