SAFA TEMPO

Carbon emissions are considered a major factor in climate change. Although Nepal contributes very little to the world's total, carbon emissions and per capita carbon emissions are low, emissions growth rate is fast. The ¡®Safa Tempo¡¯ (Safa: Clean & tempo: a shared taxi of an electric tricycle), which has been in operation since 1996 to eliminate the tempo with high-noise diesel engines, can be considered as a successful electric vehicle in the context of the Kathmandu Valley.

About 17586.83 kg/day, 17846.35 kg/day and 22757.74 kg/day of CO2 was once decreased with the aid of Safa tempo if the passengers use bus, minibus, and microbus alternatively.(Bhatt, 2013).

In order to minimize air pollution, reduce the import of fossil fuels, use the power generated from the water of various rivers and canals and make good use of the electricity generated from renewable technologies such as solar, countries including Nepal need to promote electric vehicles. The importance of electric vehicles is greater as the benefits of nature, people's health, promotion of national production, import substitution and employment opportunities can be obtained from the use of electric vehicles. This vehicle has provided the opportunity of self-employment to the lower class while giving equal priority to women drivers and women self-employment.

According to the sources, about 45.56 million liters of fossil fuels have been saved in Nepal so far from the operation of electric vehicles. From an environmental point of view, the operation of these devices has prevented the release of 120 million kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. Out of this, the function of  about 5.65 million trees have done the work. Moreover, the contribution of these resources to a clean environment is the same.

In order to create the necessary conducive environment with the aim of controlling the pollution caused by vehicles, the government has set up a goal in 2014, Environment friendly vehicle and transport policy has been formulated. The policy aims to make necessary arrangements for the promotion of electric vehicles, while an important part of the policy is to make 20 percent of the means of transport environment-friendly by 2020. The resolution registered in the parliament for the promotion of electric vehicles is memorable. In the proposal, it has been suggested to make necessary arrangements for the implementation of the government's policy of operating only electric vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley after 2027 and electric vehicles only in the country by 2031.
