All about Hydrogen Fuel Cells

by Vyomm Khanna | 11-08-2021 21:47

Humanity has been ever changing when it comes to its sources of energy. Back when we first started out, it was simply fire. Then, as time progressed, it evolved into coal, windmills and water-mills. Then came the relatively modern era, we used turbines, coal, steam, hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants for energy. However, I feel that all of this may become news of the past, as a slowly growing revolution is taking place when it comes to renewable energy sources: Hydrogen Fuel Cells.

Humanity first started using hydrogen fuel cells during space missions. Although, it was very expensive, it had high energy density which is why it was used. Nowadays, with rapid innovations in the field of science and technology, hydrogen fuel cells are becoming more economical, and they might just become the fuel of the future. Through this article, I aim to share some reasons why Hydrogen fuel cells may be the next big breakthrough.

1) They have a wide range of applications: Unlike Hydroelectricity which is only confined to huge water bodies, Hydrogen Fuel Cells can be used anywhere, from buildings, trucks, cars, electronics, calculators or even huge datacenters. They are very scalable and versatile sources of energy.

2) They are renewable and pollution free: Unlike sources like coal and oil, Hydrogen fuel cells produce absolutely no pollutants. They are also highly renewable, but this depends on the possibility of scientists find clean ways to mass produce hydrogen. They only release water as a by product of energy production !

3) They are available in abundance: Lastly, there is no scarcity when it comes to hydrogen fuel cells like there is when it comes to lithium in the case of rechargeable batteries. Hydrogen Fuel cells only require oxygen and hydrogen, and the latter is the most abundant element in the universe.

Thus, this alternative source of energy shows huge promise, but it is in the hands of scientists and researchers to find a way to tap into the large reserves of hydrogen in the universe, in order to make this project truly feasible. I hope I have been successful in teaching you all something new in the energy sector !
