(THEMATIC REPORT) GREEN COMPUTING

by Meena Pandey | 08-08-2021 03:17

Green computing, or the study and application of efficient and environmentally friendly computing resources, is attracting the interest of not just environmental organizations but also corporations from various industries. Companies in the computer sector have realized in recent years that being green is in their best interests, both in terms of public relations and cost savings.

When we first heard the term "green computing," the first thing that came to mind was "going green with computers," but the questions that came to mind at the same time were "how" and "why" to "go green," and in our search for solutions, we arrived to the conclusion "GREEN COMPUTING."

Green computing is defined as the research and practice of efficiently and effectively designing, developing, implementing, utilizing, and disposing of IT infrastructure while minimizing operating costs while having a minimal or zero environmental impact. Currently, the information and communication technology industry consumes 3% of global energy. The term "green technology" covers a wide range of topics, from new energy-generation techniques to the research of improved materials that will be employed in everyday life. According to previous studies, the focus was on computing efficiency and cost connected with IT equipment, while infrastructure services were regarded low cost and readily available. Infrastructure is now becoming a bottleneck in IT systems, owing to rising processing demands, rising energy costs, and global warming. The IT industry faces a significant challenge as a result of this transformation.

The current trend in Green Computing is to make efficient use of resources. Energy is seen as the most valuable resource, and carbon footprints are regarded as the most significant environmental threads. As a result, the focus is on lowering energy consumption and carbon footprints while improving computing speed.
