[Thematic Report] How Have Businesses Worked to Help the World Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050?

by Seojin Lee | 25-07-2021 21:59

The earth has been struggling for many years due to the climate crisis. It has been largely caused by the emission of natural gases such as carbon dioxide, and has caused many disasters such as flooding, forest fires, and excessively high temperatures. As a result, a goal has been set by the members of the world to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which is the state of having zero net carbon dioxide emissions. However, to achieve carbon neutrality, businesses and corporations that are responsible for a large portion of carbon emissions throughout the world inevitably play a huge role. Fortunately, many businesses have made public efforts for this exact goal.

Companies making technological products such as Samsung and Apple have addressed the negative effects of carbon dioxide emissions and have made a variety of efforts to reduce their emissions. For example, not only has Samsung worked to create more efficient worksites to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they have also worked to create more efficient products that do not emit as much greenhouse gases as it would¡¯ve emitted. In other words, they have evaluated the various ways the company could emit greenhouse gases, including directly through Samsung factories, electricity use from daily operations, and other emissions through indirect means such as through the suppliers from other companies. Apple, on the other hand, has claimed to have reduced carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons every year through means such as reducing box sizes, using recycled materials, and using renewable energy.

However, companies producing technological products are not the only companies that have made efforts to help the world reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Other businesses such as Coca-Cola, Hyatt, and American Airlines have addressed several methods to reduce their carbon emissions. For example, Coca-Cola is working to gather their ingredients only through sustainable means by 2020, and Hyatt is working on building more sustainable hotels while also reducing the amount of water used by each guest.

Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 seems like a bold goal, but it is possible with the cooperation of these companies along with the cooperation of governments of the world¡¯s countries. Us individuals can also drive these companies to reduce their carbon footprint by refusing to buy products or use services from companies who have not made efforts to reduce their carbon footprints.
