4 Tips To Make Your Van Eco-Friendly

by Paisley Hansen | 19-07-2021 08:10

A new trend spreading across the continent is traveling by or living in a van. This can be sustainable, cheap, and offers the opportunity for people to travel. It's also a great option for people who want to go off-grid. However, driving everywhere has its downsides. Since there are very few electric vans available on the market, you will inevitably have to use gas and nonrenewable resources to fill your vehicle. Despite that, there are still ways for van life to be eco-friendly and sustainable.

Technology

The first thing most people is that modern technological conveniences will be sacrificed. This isn't true. Modern travel vans can be equipped with televisions, internet, and vehicle camera systems. All are designed to be functional, safe, and convenient. If you are worried about space for these items, the plus side of building your own van is that you can create hidden storage for these items. Stereo systems can be hidden in cabinets and under beds while televisions can be hidden behind sliding doors. When you are planning your van, be sure to think about all of the important technology that you want to be a part of your van. Cameras and security details should also be on your list of things to consider at this time. Break-ins happen, so make sure to create a plan to help deter them.

Insulation

Insulation is typically made of nonrenewable resources. This is especially frustrating because insulation is necessary and is used all over the van. That said, there are several eco-friendly options for insulation. Wool, denim, and recycled cotton can all be used. The best way to find the right choice for you is to research each option. In general, wool is the most popular choice because it insulates well, handles moisture well, and is great at dampening sound. However, denim and recycled cotton are the more eco-friendly choice since those are reused materials. The insulation will determine how quiet and warm your van is (without the use of heaters), so make sure to take your insulation search seriously.

Electric

Vans need to have a separate system for keeping the car battery from dying quickly. Using solar energy is by far the most popular and eco-friendly option. However, there are some downsides. The components that make up a solar panel are typically not renewable resources and, while the solar panel helps in the long run, the creation of the panel itself is not good for the environment. Another option you may be able to use is wind power, but that isn't widely available for vans yet. New technologies are coming out every year that are more sustainable and more eco-friendly, especially when it comes to renewable energy sources. Before going with a solar panel, be sure to check if any new technologies may be more sustainable.

Finishes

An area in van life that is commonly overlooked is finishes. People tend to want extravagant, though not eco-friendly or sustainable choices. Instead, try to choose natural materials when possible. There are many options out there to personalize your van. Countertops and wood that are finished with beeswax, flooring trim and ceilings made of reclaimed wood, and all natural wood stains are eco-friendly options. The finishes are what really make your van uniquely yours, so make sure to choose eco-friendly options that best suit your style. For example, if you don't like the look of wood you can stain it white using an eco-friendly stain. Alternatively, you could use reclaimed metal instead of wood. This is your chance to go thrift shopping and dumpster diving for the perfect reclaimed items to go in your van.

There are many different things you can do to create the van of your dreams. Van life is a great new trend that allows you to get outside and experience the world from the comfort of your van. Creating a space that will be eco-friendly, sustainable, and comfortable is possible. All you have to do is find the perfect style van for your needs and get started.
