World Snake Day: 16th July

by Bindu Dhakal | 16-07-2021 17:05

World Snake Day is celebrated every year on July 16, to raise awareness about the different species of snakes and the role they play in maintaining ecological balance. As well this day is an opportunity to celebrate snakes and raise awareness about their conservation. Snakes are thought to have evolved from terrestrial lizards as early on Middle Jurassic Epoch, the older fossil snake called Eophis underwoodi, a small snake that lived in southern England about 167 million years ago. The snake was also known as the serpent is more than 3400 species in the world, snake represents a lizard that over the course of evolution, has undergone structural reduction, specialization, and simplification.

Snakes are misunderstood about their true nature and their position in the natural world. There is a wrong concept to the people that all snakes are poisonous and dangerous. Ophidiophobia(fear of snakes) is the most common and intense phobias among the general population. Only a small percentage around 400 species is venomous, among them also half are capable of inflicting a lethal bite. Snakebite mortality rate in the world is 80000 to 140000 per year because of poor medical treatment and venom. Snakes can control the amount of venom they inject and may bite aggressively for food or defensively to protect them. 40% of snakebite is found to be defensive in nature and dry (without venom).

Awareness is much needed among people about the importance of snakes to balance the ecosystem. Humans and snakes both are equally needed to maintain a high level of biodiversity for all life on the earth. When left alone snakes cause less harm or no harm in humans. The more you study, the more you learn about the incredible creature which is worthy of our respect and protection- and animals that we can learn to live with.
