[Thematic Report] Tesla, What's Your Secret?

by Geumbee Ahn | 30-06-2021 22:31

Tesla hasn't been a household name for long. We know the dictionary facts - that it's an American electric automobiles and clean energy company that derives the vast majority of its revenue and profit from sales of clean energy automotives - but the company itself is relatively nascent, especially in light of the number of major motor companies with illustrious histories that date back to the inception of automobiles themselves. Overcoming this barrier of prestige and history, however, Tesla has quickly entrenched itself among the ranks of high-end auto manufacturers with its clean-energy based automobiles and high customer satisfaction. In South Korea, the amount of newly registered Teslas went from 585 in 2018 and 2430 in 2019 to 11829 in 2021 - a sure indicator that Tesla is becoming well-heeled in international markets with popularity in local playing grounds to boot. We find it increasingly common to be trailing a telltale robin's egg blue license plate, issued to cars that run on electricity and hydrogen, which is more often than not paired with the symmetrical Tesla logo.

But what's so special about Tesla? Tesla is hardly the first company to produce clean-energy vehicles, and it certaintly isn't the first to have touted its horns about cutting back on carbon emissions and driving with the metaphoric green carpet of environmental friendliness rolling out from the exhaust pipes. Surely there must be a reason Tesla is riding high on the green boom when other electric vehicles like the Toyota Prius failed to generate the same kind of market influence.

1. Sophisticated Design

Sleek, modern, and urbane are the three buzzwords of the modern-day automotive design industry. Gone are the days when the clunky and gauche could pass muster as retro and quirky - each new vehicle is more streamlined and elegant than the last, unnecessary appendages flattened and excised from the exterior, gradually evolving into the futuristic capsule transports that weave between limber skyscrapers in James Cameron, Denis Villeneuve and Ridley Scott's electric cityscapes. This trend is no less true in the Tesla Model Y, which looks like it would be right at home in the phildickian canopy of a Blade Runner installment, with the neon signs going berserker in the background and noetic androids with legs like expensive instruments galore. Tesla encourages customers not to make design sacrifices for the sake of driving an electric vehicle. The compact design of the vehicle epitomizes the ideal of the electric car that many of us envisioned as the future of clean driving automotives - the only arguable difference being its lack of a flying option.

2. Owner-focused Service

When a new Marvel movie is released, many fans flock to YouTube after their initial wide-eyed screenings in the darkened bowles of their local IMAX to watch a reel of all the easter eggs they missed the first time around - small, quirky details that make the film worth viewing over and over again, if just for the perverse pleasure of leaning over to your date and showing off your dyed-in-the-stan-lee knowledge of superhero trivia. In that aspect, the programmers at Tesla have a wicked sense of humor (and perhaps an uncanny talent for marketing). If you change your Tesla's name to 42 - and isn't it sensational that you're able to change the name of your car in the first place! - a nerdy easter egg is unlocked when you press save. Instead of displaying '42' on the home screen, the Tesla identifies itself as 'Life, the Universe, and Everything'. This is a reference to the highly popular book series 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', a wide-known cult classic that may appeal to the tastes of some sci-fi loving Tesla owners who gravitated towards the vehicle for its futuristic properties.

Similarly, gamers from the 90s can appreciate the novelty of Tesla's Atari feature. The Atari feature activates traditional console games onto the Tesla's infotainment screen (fancy portmanteaus for fancy cars), and putting the game into full-screen mode allows the user to use the steering wheel as the controller. There's a laundry list of features that follow - from Santa mode, which activates a Santa onto the infotainment screen that sings and does dances, to Whoopie Cushion, which allows the user to designate what noises the car will make, in addition to emitting funny signals at turn signals and so on. Tesla offers a smorgasbord of eclectic features that keep their owners entertained.

3. Additional Sustainability Features

You may have seen solar panels on roofs and in fields, and conceded that while they may be furthering humanity's journey towards sustainable energy production, they don't exactly scream aesthetic pleasantness. The Tesla Solarglass roof, on the other hand, is as sleek and modern as their vehicles and is designed to make solar energy panels more appealing to consumers. As the name suggests, the Solarglass roof is a roof system that is composed of durable glass tiles that are able to generate solar energy. They offer a renewable source of energy for many homeowners and small businesses. The roof itself isn¡¯t made entirely of solar panels, but rather a continuous and seamless roof with photovoltaic cells hidden seamlessly within the pattern.

The Powerwall is another sustainability-promoting feature of a Tesla, and acts as the power unit where the collected solar energy goes to be stored. It allows owners to collect the solar energy from their car's roofs and feed it to their homes or even use to power their Tesla. The Powerwall also offers backup power in case of a power outage in the car, and doubles as a safer, more sustainable source of energy than a gasoline-powered generator in the event of an emergency.
