![]() ![]() ![]() Gecko lizards can be found in a number of places. Many times they're regarded as abominations in homes, and on sight one gets a broom and runs it out. But what exactly are these "little abominations", and what should we do with them? kill them anytime their image meets our retina? Or accommodate these self imposed guests. It was on a dark night after a hot and sunny day when I was attracted to the chilling winds outside the house, via the veranda. And I was glancing at the stars and appreciating mother nature, when a random house fly took away my confort. So insane to have one flying in the night! This particular one made its aim of frustrating me clearer every second that passed by, by flying back and forth, from the light bulb above the veranda to my vicinity. In my efforts to do away with it, I focused my eyes on it and as it soared to the light bulb, there lay a gecko lizard patiently waiting for it. And making no mistake, it caught and swallowed it! That changed the whole moment and never left me the same. Could these little animals eat our food too? Or perhaps do more harm than snakes! I kept on wondering whether there's more bad or good to these lizards than we currently perceive. I quickly got my phone and googled the importance of gecko lizards but instead, articles of how to kill them and those of best pesticides to kill geckoes flooded my search. That hit me differently! Was this a poisonous creature? Why are we so against them? I gave in time to know more about these reptiles and discovered that they are not actually venomous, they are as harmless as the flies they eats. Many people call them pests because they are uninvited guests, but got to understand that they deserve more and really earn their keep in the home. These geckoes are insectivore and this explains why they are mostly around lights during the night, they be there waiting for insects that are attracted by the light. Flies moths and cockroaches are their food and so having two of them in a home is a great deal of eliminating these disturbing insects. And with them, you can save money that would otherwise buy insecticides. With this gigantic important, I was yet to find out why people actually chase them out of their homes. It's because some fear them, which is understandable. They can be frightening at first but with time one gets used to seeing them, a simple solution. So when people spray using pesticides, they are actually not killing them, but killing their food, in a thinking that the lesser the food, the lesser of them, which is all together true. But, I think it would be better to accept them in the ecosystem by simply allowing them clean up your house by consuming the insects therein. You can give yourself a break at this, wouldn't you? With this, I hope we can be more accepting to geckos in our homes. Below are some interesting facts about geckoes to wrap up my article. 1. They have amazing toes that can stick to all surfaces except dry Teflon. 2. Most of them are nocturnal and are more sensitive to light than humans. 3. For some gecko species, the female can carry her pregnancy for months and even years before she lays the eggs. 4. They can also detach their tails and grow new ones if necessary, just like the other types of lizards. 5. A gecko lizard can live up to 15-20 years once well cared for. 6. Some geckos can change their colors to blend in their environments just like chameleons.
