(Thematic Report) Electric Vehicles (EVs)

by Binita Suwal | 19-06-2021 15:03

I know it is boring to read the history of anything but it's quite shocking for me to know that the concept of green vehicles is as old as the one what we normally use. It hard to pinpoint exactly who invented the first ever Electric Vehicles (EVs) but it was seen on the road for the first time in the road during early 1800s, when there was no existence of today's Tesla Motors or the any other top mileage cars. The innovators of Hungary, the Netherlands and the United states invented first small scale electric cars in early 1800s while Robert Anderson, a British inventor, developed the first crude electric carriage. The first successful Electric Vehicles (EVs) was developed by William Morrison during (1889-1891) and the electric cars gained popularity during 1899 as the electric cars are quiet easy to drive and didn¡¯t emit smelly pollutants. But the rate of using Electric Vehicles (EVs) declines during 1920-1935 as the roads became better and cheaper fuel cost. One of the reason may be even the concept is old, due to the technical limitations like batteries this electric cars couldn¡¯t flourished. And now for the same reason this electric cars, which is more than 100 years old, became the sensational topic to talk about the protection and prevention of the environment from polluting.

What are the reasons, the electric cars became popular again?

1. Reduced fuel costs: Electric Vehicles (EVs) use very less amount or no petrol as it utilize the electric batteries or charge for transport.
2. Less Emission of toxic gases than the diesel or petrol using vehicles.
3. Batteries are more technologically advanced as well as less expensive.
4. If you hate the noisy sound made by the gas vehicles, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are better option for this.
5. Electricity is a renewable resource while gasoline is not.
6. They require lesser maintenance.

Scientific studies have reported that the manufacture of an Electric Vehicles (EVs) produce more carbon (up to 15% more) than the manufacture process of the traditional vehicles.  We call the electricity is the renewable source of energy but the process of generating electricity also comes from the non-renewable sources. The recyclable batteries are also made by using lots of chemicals and the environment friendly method to recycle these batteries is still under the process of the research.  These points are enough to develop a myth that the Electric Vehicles (EVs) are not environment friendly. We can say that Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the Environment friendly and cleaner once it has been manufactured. Despite of these impacts on the environment the Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the greater option to reduce the carbon footprint.
