[may thematic report] Upcycling - you can do it yourself!

by Katie Lau | 03-06-2021 14:01

When I first saw the topic about upcycling, I remembered my first encounter - shopping in a Nike¡¯s shoe store. They had a large bin, collecting old pairs of shoes, stating that they would be made into various items, like a basketball court floor. I thought it was awesome at that time. Now researching upcycling, I can see that the concept of upcycling is much larger - not just a project of companies, but also a project that we, as everyday people, can be a part of.

In upcycling, we can use our creative brains to transform unwanted or used items into new items that can be used, rather than just throwing them away the first time. There are simply unlimited possibilities. Many items, for example, can be made into aesthetic plant pots! (pictured below) Bottles, glass jars, and even yogurt cups can be upcycled. An old cheese grater can become an interesting utensil holder. A surfboard can become a coat hanger, with hooks screwed into them.

Less realistic (but still so awesome) upcycling crafts that I¡¯ve seen are a car turned into a couch chair (picture below), and I especially love seeing the household objects made from suitcases. There are chairs, bedside tables, and wall cabinets made from them.

With the incredible possibilities of what can be made from normal items, I see it as super inspiring to think creatively of what can be upcycled. Even though upcycled items may seem unusual, some of these designs can definitely add to a unique aesthetic, as well as being eco friendly!
