World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is the only international awareness-raising and education program that celebrates the migration of bird species along with every one of the major flyways of the world – celebrated globally on two peak days every year – on the second Saturday in May and the second Saturday in October.

Every year World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated on 8 May.  “Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!” is the theme of this year’s (2021) World Migratory Bird Day, which is an annual global campaign which is dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them for their population.  This year the campaign will focus on the phenomena of “bird song” and “bird flight” as an approach to inspire and associate individuals of any age throughout the world in their shared desire to celebrate migratory birds and to join in a common, global effort to ensure birds and the habitats they need to survive.

Every year approximately 2000 of the world's 11,000 bird species migrate, taking on an equally challenging and riveting journey across the globe. Migratory birds completely ignore national borders along their migration paths, and cross entire countries and even continents. The phenomenon of migration has fascinated many people for centuries, and continues to do so today.

  For these birds, wetlands are considered as stepping stone corridor where they breed, feed and maintain their population. However, nowadays wetlands are being rapidly drained and filled for urban, industrial, and agricultural uses,  posing threats to their survival and breeding.

Migratory birds are especially vulnerable because they rely on a number of habitats: not only their migration destinations but also the sites they stop at during their journeys. Human beings are the greatest threat to migratory birds; various man-made objects and structures such as buildings, power lines and wind turbines, are often barriers to bird migration and make their journeys much more dangerous, due to which their is the deleterious impact on the bird and their population.

We should consider the consequences of our actions that have on migratory birds. Thinking about the importance of migratory birds for us culturally, economically and environmentally can help us remember that not only are there many threats facing migrating birds, but also that we have many important reasons to protect them. Protecting migrating birds and taking care so we can expect to see them return from their migrations each year will ensure that future generations can benefit and enjoy the important connections between migratory birds and people.
