by ALOK DHAKAL | 24-04-2021 14:58

Thematic Report: April

Topic: ¡®Green Architecture and the Environment¡¯

Born in village, childhood was best part of my life. Playing in house made up of thick stones, floors made up of mud, terrace of straw and the natural environment there, I still remember those day full of joy. Majority of the house in village are eco-friendly. In figure is a typical hill home that are found in Nepal. The major raw materials used in the construction are tree logs, stone, mud, straw, bamboo, etc which are obtained easily from nearby forest and nearby vicinity.

In contrast to the modern buildings made up of cement, bricks, rods, sand, etc which are obtained and prepared from exploitation of nature than compared to earlier one.  The living pattern is different in rural and urban area of Nepal. The living in rural area is eco-friendlier then in urban area.

I would like to discuss on pros and cons of those type of house found in rural areas.

Pros of traditional house that are generally found in Nepal:

-Properly designed houses are cool in hot weather and warm in winter.

-Structure versatility can be achieved (don't have to be rectangular and linear)

-Techniques for constructing those can be easily learned

-Those type of house observes toxic gases, making such houses safer and more hygienic compared to cemented ones.

- We can have beautiful exterior and interior plasters by using variety of soil available in Nepal

-Mainly, those house are cheaper and environmentally friendly

Cons of traditional house that are generally found in Nepal

-They needs regular nurturing

- Only properly designed adobe buildings are earthquake-resistant

-Regular cracks are often seen

In my view, traditional houses in Nepal are not properly designed making it not resistant to any natural calamities like earthquake. The restructuring and properly designed house can be best place to live in. I saw report of another ambassador Meena and I saw the hotels and building made using similar ideas. They attract tourists and are fascinating to see and live for new visitors. Restaurants and hotels can apply these ideas and can be perfect for living for every class of people.

Thank you!
