Natural Products to Keep Your Pets Happy and Healthy

by Kevin Devoto | 23-04-2021 01:48

Many people are looking for ways to go natural in their day-to-day life. From clean diets to alternative health remedies to solar energy, there is a popular movement toward living more sustainable, organic and less processed lives. So why not include pet care in your efforts to go green?

You can find healthier more eco-friendly products to include in your pet regimen at most pet stores these days and homemade recipes are simple and easy to make. Here are a few suggestions that will help you share a more natural and less chemically-laden lifestyle with your favorite furry friends.

Health Care

Allopathic medicines can be life-saving, but they can have unwanted side effects. When possible, consider using home remedies or holistic products for your pets rather than relying on pharmaceuticals for all their care.

Consider using omega 3 oil to combat skin issues, turmeric to deal with aching joints,  or use CBD oil for dogs for a whole host of ailments. There are a ton of sites online that can help you concoct home remedies like completely natural flea sprays made from lemon, rosemary and neem oil.

If making your own remedies makes you a bit nervous, look for companies like Wondercide that offers a line of non-toxic flea and tick care, or Native Remedies' Pet Alive line of herbal and homeopathic health remedies.

Toys and Chews

Since your fur babies don't have opposable thumbs, every toy they play with goes straight into their mouths and chews almost always get swallowed. This is one category that can really have an impact on your dog's health.

If your puppy loves to snuggle up with a stuffy, consider making your own with natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or unprocessed wool. If you're not that crafty, there are a few companies out there that will do the work for you. Check out The Good Dog Company which makes some awesome hemp tug toys or hit up Etsy for small businesses like Wagging Green who use bamboo to make their toys. Look for toys that are made from sustainable products and don't include dyes or chemicals so your pet's toys are good for them and the planet.

The most popular chew for dogs is rawhide, unfortunately, they are often processed with toxic chemicals. If you want to give your dog rawhide, make sure that it is 100 percent natural and unprocessed. Do be aware that natural chews like rawhide or antlers can pose choking hazards for your pet so supervising them while they chew is always a good idea. A safer alternative might be Kong chew toys which are made of natural rubber and are incredibly durable.

Cleaning Products

It's a good idea to go natural with any cleaning products you use in your home, and products for your pet are no different. Skip the chemicals and use simple things you have in your kitchen cabinet like baking soda and white vinegar to clean your pet's crates. You can make your own dog shampoo with gentle ingredients like castille soap, apple cider vinegar, glycerine and olive oil.

Again, if going homemade isn't for you, shop companies like Sunny and Honey which has an all-natural enzymatic cleaner for pet messes or pick up some Dr. Bonner's soap at your local grocery store. When it comes to products that come into direct contact with your pet's skin as well as your own, natural is always the best choice.

Many households are making the move towards more organic and non-toxic products, but pet supplies are often overlooked. You can easily take your pet with you on your journey to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Many safe and holistic pet products can be made at home with inexpensive ingredients that you probably already have on hand. If going the homemade route isn't for you, it is becoming increasingly easy to find companies that offer non-toxic and natural products that both you and your pet will love.
