Green Architecture in Bangladesh | Thematic Report

by Mahsinur Rahman | 15-04-2021 19:56

According to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dhaka is one of the most polluted cities in the world. Unified measures have been adopted from the national community to avoid further man-made calamities due to climate change and higher emissions. There are six main sectors most likely to be affected by climate change in Bangladesh – water resources and coastal zones, infrastructure and human settlements, agriculture and food security, forestry and biodiversity, fisheries, and human health. Deforestation has resulted in several man-made disasters in the country's history. Green buildings assure efficient usage of water and energy and the nation is struggling in the production of electricity and suffering from a shortage of water.

The First Government Green Building Initiative was taken by the Housing and Building Research Institute in 2007 The Eco-Housing Project designed by Ar. Md Nafizur Rahman. With the support of IFC-world bank the HBRI Drafted the Guideline for Green building Code in 2012:

Green Building is a type of Building which is energy efficient, water efficient, provides better indoor Environment and hence better-living conditions, uses environmentally friendly sustainable materials, produces less waste, has lesser transportation requirement, and protects or restores habitat. An increasingly popular goal for According to U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Green Building is achieving Net Zero Energy. Commercial and Residential buildings consume almost 40% of the primary energy in the United States or Europe, nearly 30% in China and approximately 32% in Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, various businesses are inter-related with real estate business, such as garment, rod, cement factory, stone, and brick industry, still mills and so on. In Many ways, construction create a huge employment opportunity to in Bangladesh. It also negatively effects on energy sector concerning consumption of the rate. It is explicit that housing is the fundamental requirement and real estate business is paying for it in a big way. A huge amount of investment and cash flow happen in this sector than other available industry. So, we should build up this part thinking about its present esteem and Government has taken up the Palli Janapod Project which is under process.

More and more funding is required to ensure that the people of my country can generate these green projects and then maybe Bangladesh can become greener.
