(Thematic Report) Green Architectures: supporting the Environment

by Binita Suwal | 11-04-2021 11:45

What else we need if we succeed to minimize the negative pressure on the environment. Decrease in environment pressure means health benefits, sound life, conservation of energy etc. For this purpose many approaches had been formed and reformed. Green architecture is one of them

Buildings made just for shelter purpose, consumes more than half of the world resources including 16% of the freshwater resources, 30-40% of energy supplies and 50% by weight of raw materials. A question may arise in mind that how a building do consumes energy and resources. Well, Heating and cooling the room, warming water, lighting, many other daily basis work we perform cause consuming energy and resources. So, we can embrace Green architecture is a method to reduce these effects.

Features of Green homes includes:

 1. efficient use of energy, water, space and other resources

2.   2. Renewable energy

3.   3. Waste management (reuse, reduce and recycle)

4.   4.Good air quality

5.   5. Natural sunlight, and solar energy harvest

6.   6. Green roof

7.   7. Rain water harvest

8.   8. Smart lighting

9.   9. LEED certified, etc.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is Green building Rating System developed by US Green Building Council (USGBC). For any commercial Buildings, a project must satisfy all LEED prerequisites to earn the certification. Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum are four level of certification.

Some of the LEED Certified Green Building Projects all around the world are:

1.  1. Shanghai Tower of China – LEED Platinum Certified

-          The building is energy saving and eco-friendly.

-          The roof greening covers more than 10000 m2.

-          Availability of fresh air all time

-          Water saving at the rate by 53%

2.   2. Soaltee Westend Premier of Nepal – LEED Silver

-          It is only the LEED Certified hotel in Nepal.

-          Top soil has been retained during the construction

-          Uses Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to remove contaminants in wastewater

-          Uses Water Treatment Plant

-          Rain water harvesting

-          Uses Radiant Technology

3.   3. Infinity Benchmark of India – LEED Platinum

-          Building saves 40% water

-          Roof Garden

-          Rain water from roof is captured to recharge ground water

4.   4. CII- Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Center, Hyderabad

5.   5. Chicago Center for Green Technology

These green buildings facilitate such a technology that utilizes maximum sunlight, manages waste in a proper manner, and hence cause less harm to the environment.
